Volunteers


If you would like to volunteer for one of these committees, please contact the volunteer committee chair.

Collaterals
Charge: Produce all printed pieces, i.e., direct mailers, posters, bookmarks and t-shirts. Select logo design and oversee ad placement for consistent message. Design invitation and other printed items. Prepare program for printer. Work with the African American Read-In (AARI) management team to determine design, content and layout of program. Coordinate deadlines/delivery of program to printer.

Fundraising/Dawson Scholarship
Charge: Work with AARI management team to secure selected sponsorships and other in-kind support. Provide oversight of the Dawson Literacy Campaign. Promote literacy efforts in association with the George Dawson "Hold Fast to Dreams" Scholarship Fund and book sales of Life Is So Good. Interact with Dawson family, community, business and corporations to forward effort. Plan special Dawson legacy-related events with the AARI management team.

Post-Event Receptions
Charge: Arrange post-event reception (caterer, programs, agenda, entertainment, guest list, invitations, decorations, etc.). Make event seating assignments for special AARI guests. Manage VIP reception including guest list, invitations, and RSVPs (for sponsors and special guests). Arrange "Green Room" catering for cast, production team and celebrity guests at for rehearsal and performance site(s).

Marketing
Charge: Distribute collateral pieces and coordinate direct mailing. Strategize with media relations committee to publicize event. Distribute group order forms.

Production
Charge: Write, design and direct production. Select program content. Determine program format, performer participation specifics and scheduling. Determine sound and stage technical needs, program parameters and logistics. Prepare scripts for cast, hosts and celebrity guests. Maintain regular communication with the AARI management team. Work with post-events reception committee to coordinate related activities.

Media Relations
Charge: Prepare information for all media (external and internal). Create press releases, media kits and talking points. Secure print, radio and TV interview opportunities. Secure taping of the event. Work in concert with the AARI management team.

Volunteers Volunteer NOW!
Charge: Secure and train volunteers to assist committees in all aspects necessary throughout event. Specifically, secure volunteers to assist in bag-stuffing, book prep and on-site venue assistance.

Diversity
Charge: Promote the AARI as a valuable volunteer activity, community partnership, corporate employee project, and family or individual experience to diverse individuals and groups.

Publications
Charge: Work with the AARI management team to solicit and confirm appropriate books, periodicals, or special edition print items for audience and community distribution. Send thank-you notes and packages to related supporters.

Senior Volunteerism
Charge: Recruit senior citizens to become involved at various Read-In participation levels, especially volunteering.

Web Site
Charge: Work in concert with the AARI management team to update the AARI Web site .

Children/Performer Gifts
Charge: Provide books and gifts for children and performers.

Printed Program
Charge: Prepare program for printer. Work with the AARI management team to determine design, content and layout of program. Coordinate deadlines and delivery of program to printer with the AARI management team.

Celebrities Committee
Charge: Work with the AARI management team to ensure that all aspects of celebrity activity are coordinated, e.g., arrivals, departures, meals and special outings, ground travel.

Community Outreach
Charge: Expand the reach of AARI by serving as an advocate and provider of supplementary information to interested individuals or groups.

Special Graphics
Charge: Assist the AARI management team in producing graphic projects, including special AARI presentations and promotions.

Book Review Liaison
Charge: Review (read and rate) books or other written materials as requested. Provide feedback, which may include a brief written review. Finalize printed program's list of recommended books.

DISD Liaison
Charge: Serve as communicator and advocate to DISD on behalf of AARI. Promote the program as a quality, free Black History Month event; an educational and cultural literacy activity; and a volunteer opportunity for staff, students and families. Interact with the AARI management team to increase collaborative opportunities between AARI and the school district.

High School Students Liaison
Charge: Recruit high school student volunteers to assist in various AARI support activities. Work with the volunteer committee.
