Host Your Own Read-In

Join the African American Read-In and help make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. Use these ideas to host a read-in in your own neighborhood:

Participate in the citywide Read-In at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday, February 3, 2007. The Read-In will include readers throughout Dallas of all ages and cultures.

Set a date in February to host or organize a Read-In on your campus, in your organization, at your place of worship or in your community. Simply invite other authors to bring the work they are currently promoting to read aloud portions for all to enjoy. Your program can be formal or informal. Include readers of diverse backgrounds, ages and philosophies. Readers may introduce their readings or tell what the writings mean to them. Group discussion is encouraged. You may encourage your invited guests to obtain and read the works beforehand. If appropriate, serve light refreshments. Create a welcoming atmosphere of warmth and sharing, teaching and learning--but most of all promote reading and literacy!

Let us know that you will participate. Please fill out the the Read-In Report Card online to let us know of your read-in event. Last year, our report to NCTE included more than 10,000 participants. Your help will increase the number this year. Need ideas? Reading lists? check our book recommendations or contact a local library. Know someone who can't read? Let us know....we can help.

We will also send you read-in bookmarks, t-shirts and book bags to give to your readers. Supplies are limited, so set your date soon! If you plan now, you will generate excitement and anticipation among family, friends, students and co-workers (why not have a read-in in your office?). Please copy and share this information with others who may decide to participate or host a read-in. If you have any ideas, send them to us to share. Send us copies of photos and your Read-In Report Card. Let's show America that "Reading Brings Dallas Together!" in 2007.

Thank you for your action in support of literacy. You will share the joy of reading and so much more from this experience!
